10-Year-Old Boy Sworn into the Ranks of 230 Law Enforcement Agencies

About a month ago, FOX 5 NY News reported on a 10-year-old boy who’d accomplished his lofty mission to be sworn into 100 law enforcement agencies. Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, who’s been battling brain and spinal cancer, wanted the challenge to help him stay positive. The Houston Independent School District Police Department ceremony capped his goal of 100 departments.

Theodis Daniel, a single father of three, spoke about his son’s effect on the cops he meets. “I said, you know a lot of things happened with law enforcement officers last week and morale was kind of low. Now here comes walking a 10-year-old and everyone’s spirits pick up.”

But, at a hundred, DJ’s collection of law enforcement agencies wasn’t nearly complete. Recently, according to Suzie Ziegler at Police1.com, the little cop was sworn into his 230th agency. He felt Victoria County, Texas, where five law enforcement agencies swore him in one ceremony, was special. There, the Victoria Fire Department also swore him in as an honorary fire marshal. DJ said, “This one was winner winner, chicken dinner. It was the best one I ever had.”

Theodis said DJ has undergone 11 surgeries, which have changed him. “He’d just come with a new personality and what has emerged is the new Devarjaye with the jokes and laughs. He says the corniest things in the world,” Daniel said. “He doesn’t let it slow him down.”

DJ’s persistence in becoming a police officer came after Hurricane Harvey struck the Texas coast in 2017. He was in awe of the three cops who helped them after the storm had destroyed their home. Theodis said, “Once those three officers made that everlasting first impression, that just kind of stuck on him.”

Victoria Police Chief Robert Arredondo said their newest, honorary officer, deputy, marshal, constable, and investigator was inspired by Abigail Arias who’d been sworn into the nearby Freeport PD when she was seven. Arias died in 2019, after her brave battle with an “incurable cancer.”

DJ immediately showed an aptitude for law enforcement priorities. After being sworn in, he announced his first action on the beat. “First, I’m going to go eat.”
