Over 10,000 Migrants are at the U.S. Border in Del Rio, Texas

Over 10,000 illegal immigrants are currently being held under an overpass in Del Rio, Texas. The majority of immigrants are from Haiti, but there are also Cubans and Venezuelan nationals. Republican Senator Ted Cruz took cell phone video from the bridge and said, “This is a crisis that is unfolding. It’s a man-made crisis.” Chad Wolfe, the former acting Homeland Security Advisor under Trump, tweeted, “Local officials pleading with the Administration for help along the border. This is absolutely insane.”

On September 16, the mayor of Del Rio, Bruno Lozano, and the Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez, held a press conference to address the situation. Within the half-hour they were speaking, 500 more immigrants crossed over into Del Rio. The small city sits right across the Rio Grande and is the international border with Mexico. Mayor Lozano confirmed another 20,000 migrants were on their way. He said, “I’m deeply frustrated. The thing that I worry about is a stampede. The thing I worry about is terrorism.” Lozano confirmed the border was wide open as he watched people walk back and forth.

The area where the migrants are housed is on top of a dirt lot surrounded by litter. Migrants were either sitting or lying on blankets under the bridge. The mayor confirmed that their medical resources are running low in Del Rio. On September 15, one female migrant was rushed to the hospital to give birth. On September 16, Border Patrol was loading a migrant into an ambulance. Sheriff Martinez confirmed that none of the migrants were being tested for Covid-19 upon entry to America. CBP is increasing its presence and manpower to help in Del Rio. CBP said, “Drinking water, towels, and portable toilets have been delivered for migrants to use while they wait to be transported to a facility.”

On September 8, the Biden-Harris administration announced that they would cancel deportation flights to Haiti. Ted Cruz reported that on September 8, there were between 700-1000 migrants. After September 8, that number increased to 10,503. Cruz said, “But when the word got out that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were no longer deporting people that came from Haiti, suddenly everyone was here, called their friends, called their family, and the numbers surged…”

Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, directed the Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety to assist in deterring migrants from the point of entry. Abbott criticized the Biden Administration, saying, “Six hours after U.S. Customs and Border Protection requested help from Texas to close ports of entry and secure the border, the Biden Administration has now flip-flopped to a different strategy that abandons border security and instead makes it easier for people to cross illegally and for cartels to exploit the border,”

It will take at least two weeks for the more than 9,000 immigrants that crossed into Del Rio to get them all processed. Lozano blamed this on the system being completely overwhelmed. Most migrants released into the U.S. are dropped off at Stripe’s gas stations, where they wait to board a bus to San Antonio. Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, told The Epoch Times, “This just seems to be an extreme example of what we’ve been seeing since Jan. 20, which is illegal immigrants, taking Biden up on his offer that if they manage to get into the United States, they’ll be let go.”
