A School District In Minnesota Will Pay Non-White Educators More Money

In Minnesota, a school district approved giving non-white teachers extra pay to mentor other non-white teachers.

Earlier this month, the Mankato school board voted unanimously to provide additional stipends to minority teachers who mentor other minority teachers. The new district policy will also place American Indian teachers with other American Indians and place educators of color at sites with other educators of color.

The school board’s goal is to increase retention rates among this demographic of teachers. The board claims, “This new policy will “increase opportunity for collegial support” for teachers who are black, indigenous, and for other people of color.

The policy continues:

“Retention strategies may include providing financial incentives for teachers of color and teachers who are American Indian to work in the school or district for at least five years and placing American Indian educators at sites with other American Indian educators and educators of color at sites with other educators of color to reduce isolation and increase opportunity for collegial support.”

The board voted for the measure on December 7 after denying that the policy would create segregation. One of the board members argued that separating teachers by race to go to certain schools was important for teachers to create a support system. The board members feared the district would lose valuable talent because people felt unsupported.

Board members felt that separating educators by race would help show they are not alone. The chairman added the initiative “creates global citizens.”

The board was able to write up this policy so that it was concurrent with a Minnesota state law. The state law reads, “School districts must develop teacher mentoring programs and that districts may offer additional stipends as incentives to mentors of color or [those] who are American Indian.”

The law also states that school districts may opt out of the race-based stipends, but the Mankato board chose to keep race-based pay.

Even though every school board member voted “yes,” there is some opposition coming from State Rep Jeremy Munson. Munson, a Republican, called the state law racist. He also condemned the policy. Munson wrote:

“I voted against this legislation. I called it racist when we debated it and believe it is wrong, racist, and unconstitutional to pay people more money or less money based solely on the color of their skin.”

  1. Anybody of non ethnic nationality should apply and identify as the ethnic nationality of their choice and if they don’t get the job the should sue for Racial Identification Prejudice!

  2. Silly me. I thought pay based on race or cultural identity was illegal.
Minnesota, Washington, Oregon, California….they keep going further over the edge .

  3. Where do the biraial fit in? Every biracial person don’t necessarily fit in with only black people because they get “left out” on either side of the race group- black and white- so are they going to be allowed to have a biracial group solely for biracials? How stupid this whole idea is. All black people don’t fit in with just black people and vice versa. This is insane!
