Amidst Baby Formula Shortage, Abbott Labs Restarts Production

Abbot Nutrition in Sturgis, Michigan resumed production of baby formula last Saturday. The plant had been closed since February when four infants contracted bacterial infections. Two of the babies died from the infections. The company also issued a voluntary recall of formula, which made the shortage worse.

Abbott has denied responsibility for the deaths after claiming the strain of bacteria was not found in their facility. Nonetheless, the FDA closed the facility after findings showed they did not maintain sanitary conditions and procedures.

The first formula Abbott will produce is Elecare and other specialty formulas. The supplies should be ready by June 20. The company will produce Similac and other formulas as soon as they can but did not give a specific date.

Abbott Labs stated:

“We understand the urgent need for formula and our top priority is getting high-quality, safe formula into the hands of families across America,” Abbott Labs said. “We will ramp production as quickly as we can while meeting all requirements. We’re committed to safety and quality and will do everything we can to re-earn the trust parents, caregivers and health care providers have placed in us for 130 years.”
