Another Useless Gun Law Hurts Only Law Abiding Americans, Not Criminals

The newest Washington State anti-gun legislation, banning “high-capacity” magazines, isn’t about “reasonable” gun laws. The radical, anti-Second Amendment Democrat state AG Bob Ferguson specifically requested the legislation to target legal gun owners. After failing to pass in 2017, a heavily Democrat-controlled state legislature finally passed it in 2022.

Ferguson’s co-conspirator, Sen. Marko Liias (D-Lynnwood), sponsored the legislation. It prohibits magazine sales and distribution but not possession—yet.

For Democrats, “high-capacity” means more than 10 rounds. With fewer cops, who are hindered by leftist policies and new “police reform laws,” and increased response times, where’s the logic in limiting self-defense rights when people need to protect themselves most? Ferguson and Liias are turning the law-abiding into lawbreakers, enacting laws that have zero impact on crime.

This while Democrat prosecutors still refuse to enforce legitimate existing gun laws that target criminals. In fact, in 2018, The leftist, anti-gun New York Times accused President Trump’s DOJ of being “too tough on criminals who purchase or possess guns illegally.”

Liias said, “My community lost three beautiful souls to a mass shooter…. These tragedies are all too common [statistically they’re rare], but they can be prevented through reasonable gun safety legislation. The only use for large-capacity magazines is to inflict the maximum amount of injury…. These are weapons of war.” This last comment is just stupid.

What does this heinous crime have to do with law-abiding gun owners? Nothing. If a lawbreaker commits DUI, vehicular assault, vehicular manslaughter, or even murder with a car, we don’t take cars away from people who don’t do those things.

The only way these laws make sense is if you buy the delusion that criminals will obey them. They never have. Why would they now?

Liias’ argument evaporates when he says the only reason for “high-capacity” magazines is to kill more people, ignoring the millions of peaceful and self-defense uses of firearms every year. He’s restricting legal gun owners’ rights based on his “feelings” about rare anomalies.

It’s just as if he passed a law restricting vehicle use based on the minority of drivers who commit crimes with cars. What’s the difference? Ferguson and Liias drive cars.
