Alexander Malofeev, a 20-year-old pianist with the Montreal Orchestra has been removed from future Montreal performances. Malofeev is a Russian citizen who has family in Ukraine and has condemned Russia’s invasion. He was removed from the orchestra so that the orchestra didn’t offend Ukrainian residents in Montreal.
Several of his fellow musicians complained about having to play with him. They were worried that the money that Malofeev made may wind up going to the Russian government to fund the war. He was scheduled to perform in Montreal on March 10 and 13.
Originally, the orchestra did not remove him, due to him speaking out against the Russian invasion. The Vancouver Orchestra officially canceled him on March 2, purely for his nationality.
Malofeev wrote:
“The truth is that every Russian will feel guilty for decades because of the terrible and bloody decision that none of us could influence and predict…It is very painful for me to see everything that is happening. I have never seen so much hatred going in all directions, in Russia, and around the world.”
Even after his public post, the orchestra stated it would still be “inappropriate” to take Malofeev at this time. The orchestra said:
“We continue, however, to believe in the importance of maintaining relationships with artists of all nationalities who embrace messages of peace and hope,” Ouimet added. “We look forward to welcoming this exceptional artist when the context allows it.”
