AOC Attends Met Gala and Critics Immediately Call Out Her Hypocrisy

On September 13, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attended the 2021 Met Gala wearing a custom “Tax the Rich” dress. The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala benefiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Her ensemble created quite the social media stir, with fans cheering while critics criticized her on Twitter. The irony was not lost on those who recognized that she spent her evening hobnobbing with wealthy Hollywood elites.

Donald Trump Jr. tweeted, “What makes @AOC a bigger fraud: The “tax the rich” dress while she’s hanging out with a bunch of wealthy leftwing elites or the lack of masks after spending the past 18 months as one of the biggest authoritarian mask Karens in the country?”

Dave Portnoy also chimed in, “Tax the Rich”……But first, I’m gonna [sic] go have the time of my life partying with them all at the most extravagant over-the-top party of the year that is essentially a celebration of richness.”

A single ticket price to attend the Met Gala is at least $30,000, while the price for a table is around $275,000. Her dress was custom-made by Brother Vellies. The designer of the dress is a black immigrant woman named Aurora James. In an interview on the red carpet, Ocasio-Cortez spoke about being paired with Aurora and what it means to be a working-class woman of color at the Met. Ocasio-Cortez said, “We can’t just play along, but we need to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions.” The congresswoman makes around $174,000 a year, well over the average working-class American.

Ocasio-Cortez dismissed her critics, tweeting, “And before haters get wild flying off the handle, New York elected officials are routinely invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public…I was one of several in attendance this evening.” New York’s Mayor DeBlasio also attended the Gala.
