Beyonce Changes Song Lyric Following Online Backlash

Some listeners are upset with a song from Beyonce’s new album Renaissance. They claim her usage of the term “spaz” is offensive to those with disabilities, including those who have cerebral palsy. In the song, Beyonce sings, “Spazzin’ on that a**, spaz on that a**.”

According to Variety, disability rights activist Hannah Diviney spoke out against the song, prompting Beyonce to change the lyrics. A representative for the singer said, “The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced.” Beyonce is not the only musician to use the term “spaz” in a song recently and face backlash online. Last month, singer Lizzo changed the lyrics to her song “Grrrls” after receiving criticism from fans for using the word.

In addition to the backlash over the lyrics, Beyonce is also facing criticism from singer Kelis, who claims Beyonce sampled one of her songs without permission. However, despite the controversy, Beyonce is not likely to be “canceled”. According to a poll conducted by Billboard, 57% of respondents said her album was the best new release of the week.
