Biden’s press secretary Jen Psaki announced yesterday that Biden would likely not address Americans live on the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 but that Biden would be releasing a pre-taped message for the American people.
Almost 1,800 Americans directly connected to the terrorist attacks on 9/11 asked Biden not to participate in the ceremony to honor those who died. The families wanted Biden to skip the memorial events unless he decides to declassify evidence connecting the Saudi government’s possible support of those who committed the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The statement signed by the families stated, “We understand President Biden’s desire to mark the solemn occasion of the 20th Anniversary at Ground Zero. However, we cannot in good faith, and with veneration to those lost, sick, and injured, welcome the President to our hallowed grounds until he fulfills his commitment.”
“As we approach the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 and having been used as a political bargaining chip for two decades, our patience has expired,” the letter read. “We had great hope that President Biden, …, would value the lives and sacrifices of America’s citizens over diplomatic relations with a country accused of mass murder.”
The group stated, “Twenty years later, there is simply no reason – unmerited claims of “national security” or otherwise – to keep this information secret.”
According to the NY Post, Biden “ordered a declassification review of secret documents related to the FBI’s 9/11 investigation.” Biden reportedly signed an Executive Order granting Attorney General Merrick Garland the authority to begin preparing the documents to be released to the American public over the next six months.
Biden claimed in a statement that declassifying the documents is fulfilling “a commitment to ensuring transparency” surrounding the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “As we approach the 20th anniversary of that tragic day, I am honoring that commitment,” said Biden.
The NY Post reported that the 9/11 victim’s families were excited at the move to declassify the documents. “We are thrilled to see the President forcing the release of more evidence about Saudi connections to the 9/11 Attacks. We have been fighting the FBI and intelligence community for too long, but this looks like a true turning point,” announced Terry Strada, one of the group’s members.
