Bike Rider Hit By Speeding Stolen Vehicle Is On The Road To Recovery

A Fort Lauderdale man is recovering from what could have been life-threatening injuries if the scene had gone another way.

Michael Evans was biking to work as per usual on the morning of May 19, 2021. Evans was at the corner of Sistruck Boulevard and Northwest 27th avenue when a speeding black Infiniti QX60 SUV struck him and fled the scene.

“As soon as it happened, I know what happened and I dragged myself to the grass, out of the middle of the street,” Evans recalled. “It could have been a lot worse, and I know that. Part of that makes me really grateful.”

Evans was rushed to Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Health Medical Center and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A GoFundMe has been set up by his sister to help cover expenses while he recovers.

According to his mother, Michelle Evans, “He has multiple fractures on his neck and spine, a laceration on his head and ear that he needed morphine for, and now they’re looking at his knees that started to swell.”

The Tatum Report loves to point out evidence of divine intervention, and Evans’ survival, albeit with a long road to recovery, is an example of just that. Not all bicyclists who are plowed by an SUV in a high-speed chase live to tell the tale.

What about those who were in the Infiniti SUV that fled the scene?

They were amidst a high-speed chase with Fort Lauderdale police after stealing an Infiniti from a Miami-Dade county home in the 2200 block of Northeast 28th avenue. They had attempted to steal another vehicle from a home’s garage when the cops gave chase.

The vehicle fled, hitting Evans as they turned a corner and headed towards I-95, with several police cruisers in pursuit.

Helicopter footage of the incident shows the black SUV barreling down the freeway when it attempts to cross all lanes of traffic to make a hasty exit.

It clips two other SUVs, including a blue Honda, in its attempt but does not clear the exit. Instead, the SUV goes careening into the guardrail, flipping onto its roof.

The driver of the Honda was identified as Sharon Gleuck, who said she was traumatized and shaken. She recounted the ordeal with a local news station.

“I was on the way down to work in Miami Shores when I was hit by a car, maybe a few cars, I don’t know,” Glueck told Local 10 News. “I spun around and next thing I know, when I stopped, I was next to a police car and they had their guns drawn on I saw one teenager, and they told me to move and get out of the car and get away from the scene,”

With a patrol car already present, another comes in hot, hitting the flipped Infiniti as one of the suspects is attempting to crawl out the back window. Police can be seen pulling suspect after suspect out of the car, five in total.

All five subjects are juveniles; two of the five suspects have been identified as 16-year-olds Demetrius Major and Rashaun Craig; two are 14-years-old, and the fifth is a mere 12-years-old.

The juveniles were taken to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to treat non-life-threatening injuries. They’ve been charged with multiple counts of grand theft auto, burglary of an occupied dwelling, and fleeing, eluding, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Except for the 12-year-old, all suspects already have previous grand theft auto and burglary charges, some occurring within the last two months.
