There has been a significant rise in anti-Semitic attacks on American Jews all over the country. The conflict between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas and harmful rhetoric from U.S. Congressmen fueled tensions between Pro-Israel and Pro-Palestinian sympathizers.

Republicans have been urging Biden to make a statement in support of American Jews. Still, until today Biden has stayed neutral on the issue, asking both sides to calm the waters. Michael Makovsky, President and CEO of the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA), told the Daily Caller that “a lot of Jews are starting to feel that their lives are seen as cheap in recent years.” He said that Biden should “absolutely” be speaking out against these attacks.

Biden’s Twitter account finally answered the calls for a Presidential comment this morning when it tweeted, “The recent attacks on the Jewish community are despicable, and they must stop. I condemn this hateful behavior at home and abroad – it’s up to all of us to give hate no safe harbor.”

Sen. Josh Hawley tweeted in response to Biden, “After nearly 200 documented attacks against Jewish Americans in recent days, this statement is overdue.” He said, “I hope President Biden will now support my resolution condemning these attacks and the hateful rhetoric by members of Congress that has helped fuel them.”

Sen. Hawley was referring to attacks like the one in NYC last Thursday where a pro-Palestinian mob watched as a Jewish man was violently attacked. Waseem Awawdeh from Brooklyn is accused of beating Joseph Borgen “with crutches and punching, kicking and pepper-spraying him.” The motive for Awawdeh beating Borgen is assumed to be because Joseph Borgen is Jewish.

The prosecutor spoke in front of the Manhattan Criminal Court on Saturday that Awawdeh told one of the guards, “If I could do it again, I would do it again. I have no problem doing it again.”

The prosecutor also said that Waseem Awawdeh screamed “dirty Jew” and “F*** Israel, Hamas is going to kill all of you” to Joseph Borgen. Awawdeh was charged with assault as a hate crime, gang assault, menacing, aggravated harassment as a hate crime, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Borgen spoke with the N.Y. Post saying, “I felt a liquid being poured on my face, and at first I thought I was getting urinated on. But it turned out I was getting maced and pepper-sprayed.” He said his “face was on fire” from the chemical burns. “The pain was worse than the concussion and all this other stuff that followed.”

He described his injuries, saying, “I have a concussion. I had an x-ray on my wrist. It’s not broken, but it’s messed up. Every time I move it, it’s in pain, probably sprained. I have bruises all over my body. I have a black eye. My face is banged up. I’m just sore all over my body. They were kicking me in my ribs and stomach.”

Borgen now feels like it’s not safe to wear his yarmulke, a cap worn by orthodox Jews, in public anymore.
