Californians Flee to Mexico for More Affordable Lifestyle

With California’s rent and gas prices soaring, residents are leaving the state to an unlikely location. Californians are fleeing to Mexico to be able to afford everyday necessities, like rent.

The average home price in California in 2021 was $797, 470. Rent in San Diego can average around $1500, while rent in Mexico is around $430.

Darrell Graham of Baja123 Real Estate Group stated: “I would say at least half are coming down from California. Suddenly the cost of taxes, the crime rates, the politics, all the things that people are unhappy with in California are wanting to come down to Mexico.”

In 2021, the state lost 280,000 more residents than it gained. According to a 2021 poll, half of California residents have considered moving away from the state.

A policy analyst at the Migration Policy Institute said, “Certain neighborhoods are now becoming too expensive for Mexican citizens to live in because most of the time people that are actually buying the property developments are being able to do so because they either make money in US dollars, or because they are working remotely.”
