According to state officials, California’s recall effort against Gov. Gavin Newsom was successful after more than 1.5 million signatures were validated, consequently forcing a new election within 90 days. The California Secretary of State’s Office released an official statement Wednesday night on their website.
Officials have reported that a total of 43 signatures were withdrawn from Governor Gavin Newsom’s petitions, with the remaining 1,719,900 verified signatures still meeting the threshold to return the election.
“A sufficient number of verified recall signatures had previously been reached by recall proponents in April,” the Secretary of State’s office announced in a statement. “However, in accordance with California election law, voters were given a 30-day period from April 26 to June 8 to request county officials remove their signatures from recall petitions.”
Now, the California Department of Finance is required to estimate the costs of a recall election, either in a special election or if it is part of the next regular elections. The vote must be held within 90 days.
In California’s 18 years of history, Newsome is just the second governor to be retracted from his post.
The struggle to remove Governor Newsome from office began after Californians became enraged by his initial response to the pandemic outbreak. In addition, support for impeaching Newsome grew after NPR published a report alleging that the governor had “misled” the public about his state’s wildfire prevention efforts.
The impeachment campaign began nearly a year ago. Efforts to recall California’s 40th governor started to ramp as the hypocrisy of Newsome became more evident by the day.
In March, Bernie Sanders and Gavin Newsome tweeted that Californian citizens who favored impeaching Newsome were “extremists republicans” and claimed the only reason for any opposition was because of Newsome’s masking policies. However, numerous citizens from both political parties worked tirelessly to gain 1,719,900 signatures after months of experiencing excessive lockdowns, hundreds of small businesses closing, and the homeless population skyrocketing.
This Republican recall threatens our values and seeks to undo the important progress we’ve made — from fighting COVID, to helping struggling families, protecting our environment, and passing commonsense gun violence solutions.

Right-wing Republicans in CA are trying to recall @GavinNewsom for the crime of telling people to wear masks and for listening to scientists during COVID. Extremist Republicans have done enough to undermine democracy already. We must all unite to oppose the recall in California.

Nonetheless, the most controversial incident occurred last November when photos were released from a whistleblower inside a luxury restaurant in Napa, California, featuring Governor Gavin Newsom dining with a large group of people, violating COVID restrictions he himself enacted.
Now that the recall is underway, an election will be held to determine who will succeed him. The Secretary of State shall certify the candidates’ names.
This historic moment in history is a prime example of what can happen when citizens stick together and unite to throw out their tyrannical government.
