Campaign to Recall Los Angeles County DA Gascon Has Collected 500,000 Signatures

Cop-hating LA DA George Gascon

Recall organizers in Los Angeles County claimed Wednesday that they were nearing the end of a months-long effort to compel the resignation of District Attorney George Gascon, who has been under fire for a spike in crime. Fox News reports that as of Monday, the Recall George Gascon campaign had collected 500,000 signatures; they need 67,000 more signatures from registered voters to put the recall question on the ballot by the July 6 deadline.

The organization has mailed 3.6 million petitions to voters in Los Angeles County to gather the remaining signatures. It claimed that 5% of people who receive and sign the forms would be more than enough to get the campaign across the finish line. The group told Fox News Digital that “the recall is figuratively and literally in the hands of LA County voters.”

The recall campaign is the second attempt by Gascon’s critics, who have attempted to blame him for a rise in crime in the area. Gascon took office in December 2020 and immediately instituted a variety of progressive changes, including not pursuing cash bail or the death penalty, and not prosecuting minors as adults, even for heinous offenses.

Earlier this year, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva went so far as to circumvent Gascon’s office and turn over to the Justice Department the files of four people allegedly tied to the shooting death of a Los Angeles police officer. Gascon’s leadership of the country’s largest district attorney’s office has spurred some of his own prosecutors to support the recall effort.

Los Angeles County prosecutor Jonathan Hatami stated, “This isn’t just a recall. It’s a public safety movement. Democrats, Republicans, DTS’s, and independents – ANGELENOS – have all come together, have dedicated their time, and have worked incredibly hard over the last 18 months to fight for victims, survivors, families and children when George Gascón completely abandoned them.”
