Capitol Police Arrest Man Near DNC Offices with Bayonet and Machete

U.S. Capitol Police apprehended a man in a vehicle near the Democratic National Committee offices in Washington D.C. with a bayonet and machete, both of which are illegal in Washington. The man identified as Donald Craighead, 44, of Oceanside, California, was arrested for illegally possessing the weapons.

Local and federal authorities have been prepping for a September 18 protest against the imprisonment of January 6 demonstrators. However, police claimed they do not know why Craighead was in the area. Craighead’s father told USA TODAY that he didn’t think his son was there to protest, stating, “he’s not a Trump supporter; I don’t think he’s ever hurt anyone.” The father also said that his son has a history of mental illness and drug use. He continued saying that “we have done all we could to help him. I’m glad they [police] got him because we don’t want anybody to be hurt.

Craighead was arrested on the 500 block of South Capitol Street, near the DNC offices and roughly half a mile south of the U.S. Capitol.
