Cawthorn calls on V.P. Harris and Cabinet to Invoke the 25th Amendment to Remove President Biden

On Thursday, August 27th, Madison Cawthorn, a freshman Republican, called for President Joe Biden to be removed from office. Cawthorn sent a letter to Vice President Kamala Harris, asking her to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Biden. This was in response to Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In his letter, he wrote, “ … President Biden is no longer capable of discharging the duties of his office. Our nation is at a crisis point…” Cawthron appeared on Fox News on Thursday night and said, “Joe Biden’s physical inability to lead is not a political talking point – it’s a demonstrable fact. He is not mentally fit to serve as president of the United States.”

In order to invoke the 25th Amendment, the Vice President and the majority of the cabinet would need to tell Congress that the President is “Unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” After this, the V.P. takes over as President. The amendment has not been invoked, except for brief periods where the President is unconscious or if the President is undergoing surgery.

The request from Cawthorn came just hours after 13 U.S. service members died in a terrorist bombing outside Kabul airport. In a news briefing, Biden vowed to hunt down and kill the terrorists whose bombs killed Americans. Fox News reports, “That his response was confusing and inadequate, especially after the U.S. withdrawal severely curtailed intelligence capabilities in the war-torn country, angered NATO allies and raised fears that hundreds of U.S. citizens and tens of thousands of Afghan allies may be stranded behind enemy lines – at risk of death at the hands of the Taliban.”

A dozen Republicans have called for Biden to resign, such as Senators Josh Hawley and Marsha Blackburn. When Press secretary Jen Psaki was asked about this and said, “ It was, ‘not a day for politics.’ ”
