CDC Changed Tune on Masks After Teachers Unions got Involved

Several of our national institutions took significant blows to their credibility during the height of the Covid pandemic and after. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) arguably took the most damage other than the mainstream media.

Conservatives, as a general rule, look sideways at any new Covid recommendations from the CDC. There is proof that the CDC changed the guidelines on masking children after the influential teachers’ unions threatened the agency in newly released emails.

Internal emails between the National Education Association (NEA), White House officials, and the CDC, show that the NEA threatened to publicly criticize the White House and the CDC if stricter mask policies weren’t implemented.

Fox reported, “The National Education Association sent a draft statement to White House officials that included harsh criticism of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s masking guidance, the emails show.”

According to the report, after the White House officials received the threat from the NEA, the CDC and the White House “clarified [their] guidance to indicate that everyone should be masked in schools, regardless of vaccination status.”

One day after the CDC announced that fully vaccinated Americans could remove their masks regardless of whether they were indoors, Erika Dinkel-Smith, the Biden Administration director of labor engagement, emailed Sherri Berger and others from the CDC.

Erika Dinkel-Smith’s email addressed to Sherri Berger stated, “Would you know when Dr. Wolensky would be able to call NEA-Pres. Becky Pringle? They’ve gotten significant [calls, emails, etc.] incoming and are getting targeted for a response from the media. I’ve gotten them to hold on their statement calling for clarification.”

According to the emails received through the Freedom of Information Act request, the NEA threatened White House officials to release the following statement:

“We appreciate the developing nature of the science and its implications for guidance, but releasing the guidance without accompanying school-related updates creates confusion and fuels the internal politicization of this basic health and safety issue.

“CDC has consistently said, and studies support, that mitigation measures, including to protect the most vulnerable, remain necessary in schools and institutions of higher education – particularly because no elementary or middle school students, and few high school students, have been vaccinated.

“This will also make it hard for school boards and leaders of institutions of higher education to do the right thing by maintaining mitigation measures. We need CDC clarification right away.”

The FOIA requests were made by Americans for Public Trust (APT) and given exclusively to Fox to highlight the lack of scientific guidance used in the CDC’s updated masking policy. Caitlin Sutherland, APT Executive Director, told Fox, “This batch of emails came just weeks after we already exposed the teachers’ unions influenced the CDC on school openings.”

“Lo and behold, less than two weeks later, they’re at it again, but this time in relation to mask guidance,” Sutherland said.
