Chicago Mayor Blames Rise in Carjackings on Kids Playing Hooky from Online School

On Monday, Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot made an unsubstantiated claim linking the recent uprising in local carjackings to remote school learning.

Lightfoot completely ignored the fact that she reduced the police force budget by $59 million, and this very crime has been dramatically rising in her city over the course of the pandemic.

She didn’t bat an eye when she placed the blame on children playing hooky from online school.

She stated:

“I think in Chicago we have consistently seen 50% or higher of the people that we are arresting are juveniles… A lot of parents went to work during the day thinking their teenagers were logged on for remote learning, only to find something else. And I ask, ‘is there some new market for stolen cars?’ And unfortunately the answer was no – that for many of these kids, some of whom had no prior involvement in the criminal justice system, this was pure boredom.”

According to the Chicago Police Department’s annual report, carjackings increased 134.33% from 603 incidents in 2019 to 1413 in 2020.

In other words, these carjackings aren’t new but Lightfoot’s way to justify the expansion of Chicago’s vehicular hijacking task force and install more cameras and license plate readers around the city.

The Chicago Teachers Union is livid, stating that the “Mayor equates CPS students with criminals by claiming COVID school quarantine led to increased carjacking without producing scintilla of evidence, echoing smears of CPS students and staff from Reagan education boss Bill Bennett.”

They demanded the mayor apologize to every student for her “racist claim.”

It says in part:

“Does the mayor not understand that to claim that remote learning causes car-jacking is intellectually unsound and politically venal? Is the reason she resisted moving to remote learning during the Omicron surge because her bogus belief in that false correlation has become part of her crime-fighting tactics?… Public school students and families need respect and support from the mayor, not her endless finger-pointing and buck-passing – especially not onto the backs of our students, who the mayor continues to desperately shortchange in the public school district that she runs.”

  1. Newt Gingrich had a solution to kids being bored. Give the kids the tax money they would spend in for a highschool education in the 8th grade. Send them to work, in retail, hospitality, warehouse, manual production, or construction. Give employers an incentive for hiring these kids. Let them learn what they need to do a job on the job. This way, you do not spend money on unnecessary training. The Amish do this.

  2. This woman (and I use that term loosely) is a disgrace. Pure & simple. I feel bad for the people of Chicago but they can fix it next year. VOTE HER OUT! She is destroying your city!
