Chicago PD Officer Facing Internal Investigation for Supporting Daughter in Opening TPUSA Chapter

While Turning Point USA (TPUSA) is hosting the nation’s largest conservative event of the year, administrators at a Chicago high school have prevented students from opening a TPUSA chapter.

Now a Chicago police officer is being investigated for supporting her daughter’s desire to open the chapter. She is currently the subject of an internal investigation by expressing her support. She didn’t even know it until Fox News reached out to her for comment.

Ammie Kessem is a 20-year veteran police sergeant with the Chicago Police Department and serves as the Committeeman for Chicago’s 41st Ward.

Her daughter informed her about the formation of a TPUSA chapter at Taft High School. She did what many people do and posted her opinion on social media. She told her Facebook audience that she was proud of the students for thinking for themselves, calling them “brave students.”

Her post read:

”Some brave students will be creating this Chapter of Turning Point USA tomorrow at Taft High School which is located on the Northwest side of chicago [sic] in the 41st Ward. I could not be more proud of them. In a city where Liberal Progressives have continually and unjustifiably attacked the characters of conservatives, including myself and my children, by calling us ‘Nazis’, ‘White Supremists’ [sic] and outright ‘racists’, I am certain these students realize that this will almost certainly be scrutinized by the administration at this school which seems to embrace the Marxist views of a substantial amount of the Chicago Teacher’s union members. Please help support them and their cause by posting some encouraging messages on this page. I will be sure to pass it along to them. We must not give up on our youth. Please and thank you.”

Even though she made the post on her personal time with her personal account, the Chicago Police Department felt it necessary to conduct an internal investigation. They haven’t provided any details as to why it was necessary.

Ethan Blevins, a free speech attorney at the conservative Pacific Legal Foundation, told Fox News that the police department has no right to regulate its employees’ speech when they are off duty.

Despite no apparent wrongdoing, internal investigations can deter others from exercising their freedom out of fear of retaliation.

Blevins stated, “I think it hurts her reputation, even if nothing may come of the investigation, but the investigation itself can be damaging.”

He goes on to say, “Nobody wants to be investigated. Again, even if she’s exonerated and nothing comes of it. Nobody wants to face that in their employment.”

Kessem is known to speak out for what she believes in. According to the Post Millenial, she reported an Antifa teacher who claimed he was “proudly anti-fascist” and supported police defunding in the summer of 2021.
