Darryinn Brown is Indicted for Capital Murder in The Death of Cash Gernon

The murderer of Cash Gernon, a 7-year-old child who was abducted from his bedroom in the middle of the night in Dallas, Texas, has been charged with three counts of murder, including capital murder, and faces the death penalty. The abductor stabbed Gernon and left him to die in the middle of the street until a passing runner discovered him.

According to court records acquired by the Daily Mail, a Texas grand jury indicted Darryinn Ronnell Brown, 18, on Monday on counts of capital murder, abduction, and burglary in the May 15 killing of Cash Gernon.

Footage shows Brown breaking into the victim’s home in the middle of the night and kidnapping the child while he and the parents were sleeping. Police said the 911 call did not come from Gernon’s home. According to authorities, the child had received “several wounds” with an “edged weapon.”

Antwainese Square found the body of Gernon in the middle of the street bloody and helpless around 7 a.m. on Saturday morning and made the 911 call.

According to authorities, Brown knew Gernon’s teenage “brother,” Kamron Mori, but no information regarding a possible motivation for the murder has been provided.

“We got cameras all over the place in my house,” said Moori. “It shows him coming in, took him while he was asleep. While he was asleep. Carried him out of my house while he was asleep,” Moori’s mother told NBCDFW.

Brown’s lawyer, Heath Harris, expects that Brown would be ruled unable to stand trial following a mental evaluation. Harris has raised worries about Brown receiving a fair trial in prior interviews, particularly after the surveillance footage was made public. According to Harris, Brown’s mental health “will be the cornerstone of our defense.” He has also stated that the case is not ‘open and shut.’

“Even if you believe that’s [Brown] on the video, it doesn’t mean he killed the kid,” Harris told the Dallas Morning News in a previous interview. “The world is basically prejudicing this whole community by saying, “That’s him.”

Brown may face life in prison or execution by lethal injection if convicted of capital murder. Prosecutors have not yet decided whether to pursue the death sentence, but they will be obliged to make that decision by the start of the court hearing.
