A Maryland daycare owner is being held on domestic violence and guns charges after she discovered her husband was molesting children at her daycare.
Shanteari Weems, 50, shot her husband James Weems Jr., 57, on Thursday in Washington DC. He was already under investigation but the news reached his wife before authorities did. Her only regret? “I didn’t put the bullet in your head.”
The couple were staying in the Mandarin Oriental in Washington DC when Shanteari received texts messages from several daycare parents accusing her husband of sexually touching their children.
James was already under investigation for allegedly molesting three girls at Lil Kidz Kastle in Maryland, his wife’s daycare center.
An argument ensued, she claims he made an aggressive advance on her so she pulled a gun out and shot him in the head, albeit not fatally.
Shanteari refused to come out at the request of the police for at least an hour but eventually emerged.
She was arrested on domestic violence and gun charges while he was taken to the hospital for his injuries. He was then arrested at the hospital on charges of molestation and is expected to fully recover.
Police found notes penned by both Weems in the hotel room. They found the following in James’ handwriting, quoting his wife as saying, “I want him to face the world as scum” and “I hope he gets beat up in jail and I’m [going to] paralyze you.”
Notes she penned said, “I want these kids to get justice, and you gonna pay” and “My only regret for me is that I didn’t put the bullet in your head.”
Shanteari is due in court on Friday. Her attorney Tony Garcia said:
“We’re standing by our client. You know what I mean? Our client says she was defending herself, and we’re standing by it and we’re standing by her. And, we’ll be proceeding going forward in that vein.”
