Florida Quarterback Gives Up Nickname After Controversy

Anthony Richardson, the Quarterback for the Florida Gators caved under pressure to change his nickname. His nickname had been “AR-15” which are the initials of his first and last name plus his jersey number. After talking with those people close to him, he decided to retire the nickname that he shares with the most popular sporting rifle.

Richardson stated, “After discussions with my family and much thought, I have decided to no longer use the nickname ‘AR-15’ and the current apparel line logo, which features a scope reticle, as part of my branding. While a nickname is only a nickname and ‘AR-15’ was simply a representation of my initials combined with my jersey number, it is important to me that my name and brand are no longer associated with the assault rifle that has been used in mass shootings, which I do not condone in any way or form.”

He continued to say that he will rebrand his merchandise with just an “AR” and his full name. Richardson already launched a clothing line selling jerseys, shirts, and other gear.
