Gov. Abbott Issued E.O. Banning Vaccine Mandates Affecting Texas-Native Southwest Airlines

The drama surrounding the national vaccine mandate is expected to heat up. This week speculation surrounding the cancellation of thousands of flights by Southwest caused several people to claim the airline’s pilots were calling in sick to protest the vaccine mandates. Southwest and the pilot union announced that it was not a coordinated effort to protest but rather weather issues that canceled the flights.

It absolutely had nothing to do with the vaccine mandates and everything to do with the weather.

Seemingly in response to the weather crisis at Southwest, which has its headquarters in Texas, Gov. Abbott issued an Executive Order banning vaccine mandates by any entity. He called the mandates “yet another instance of federal overreach [by] the Biden Administration,” who Abbott accused of “bullying” companies into imposing the vaccine mandate.

Gov. Abbott blamed Biden’s mandates for “causing workforce disruptions” that the Governor said, “threaten Texas’s continued recovery from the Covid-19 disaster.”

He said that “countless Texans fear losing their livelihoods because they object to receiving a Covid-19 vaccination,” and his Executive Order will hopefully alleviate that fear.

Gov. Abbott also instructed the Texas Congress to prepare to debate the issue in the upcoming special session.

The message states that “no entity in Texas can compel receipt of a Covid-19 vaccination by any individual, including an employee or consumer, who objects to such vaccination for any reason of personal conscience, based on a religious belief, or for medical reasons, including prior recovery from Covid-19.”

“The Covid-19 vaccine is safe, effective, and our best defense against the virus, but should remain voluntary and never forced,” Gov. Abbott said.
