Guilty On All Charges

Derek Chauvin begin handcuffed

Guilty. Guilty. Guilty.  The verdict rang out three times today as jurors found former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin guilty on all charges. The trial, in connection with the May 2020 death of George Floyd, concluded this afternoon.

Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. During deliberations, which began on Monday, jurors were sequestered with their whereabouts unknown. After deliberating for approximately 10 hours, a unanimous decision was announced.

After court was back in session, the judge swiftly read all three guilty verdicts out loud, then polled the jurors. Chauvin’s sentencing appearance is scheduled for approximately eight weeks from today. If sentenced to the maximum of each charge, Chauvin could be facing 75 years in prison.

Chauvin’s bail was revoked, and he was led from the nearly silent courtroom with his hands cuffed behind his back. Screams, cheers, car horns honking, and general sounds of jubilation were reported to be heard outside the courthouse after the verdict was announced.

National Guard troops and law enforcement officers were all on stand-by awaiting the verdict. Many businesses were closed up and barricaded in case looting, and rioting broke out.

Fox News shared information breaking down the composition of the jury. It consisted of seven women and five men. Six jurors were White, four were Black, and two identified as multiracial.

More details on this story to come.
