Hand Microchip Could Be Used to Make Contactless Payments

Walletmore, a London-based company, has developed a microchip that can be implanted in people’s wrists to make contactless payments easier.

The microchip will work with the digital wallet app Purewrist. Once the app is downloaded on the user’s phone, the user will need to go to a specialist to have the chip inserted into their hand. The chip and app work in conjunction with businesses that use the app. After users are set up with the chip and the app they can make payments.

The company says the implant costs $299 and is safe to put into your skin. The implant insertion procedure takes about four minutes. The incision is typically about seven millimeters long.

The founder and executive stated:

“The implant can be used to pay for a drink on the beach in Rio, a coffee in New York, a haircut in Paris – or at your local grocery store.”

Tap-to-pay payment systems have surged in popularity during the pandemic when people wanted to avoid physical interaction with credit cards and cash.
