Indianapolis Firefighters Rescue Cat—Rescuer—from Tree

This kid had great instincts, and he’s an example of the spirit we’d like in America’s youth, but…. Recently, a 17-year-old boy, identified only as “Owen,” attempted something noble: rescue a cat from a tree. However, the attempt turned into something a bit more embarrassing when he got stuck in the tree.

The Indianapolis fire department responded to rescue the would-be rescuer. Owen was at Indianapolis’ Holliday Park when he saw the cat about 35 feet up, sitting on a tree branch.

According to the New York Post, the IFD spokeswoman said the boy told firefighters “he was trying to do a good deed and bring the cat to safety.” She added, “While Owen had no trouble climbing up the tree, his positioning did not allow the same ease for getting down.”

The IFD posted photos and comments on the department’s Facebook page.

Firefighters assigned to Tactical Rescue 14 used rope techniques to secure Owen and lower him to safety. The rescue took about two hours. Fire crews could not use a ladder truck because the ground was too saturated to hold the truck’s weight “without getting stuck.” Otherwise, the rescuers of the rescuer might have needed rescuing.

Medics checked out the teen, who only had a “few scrapes.” His parents picked him up and took the well-intentioned lad home.

And what about that wayward feline? It stayed in the tree, apparently not knowing it needed rescuing. The IFD spokeswoman said, “The cat seemed to enjoy the commotion, but made no effort to climb down the tree.”

The spokeswoman said, the cat’s owner eventually hired a private company to retrieve her cat. Reportedly, the woman was “upset firefighters didn’t rescue the cat while they were up in the tree to help the boy down.”

Firehouse.com pointed out a Facebook post that read, “Further proof that cats are jerks. Adorable, lovely, undeniable jerks.”

Before attempting or hiring someone to perform another cat rescue, both “Owen” and the cat’s miffed owner might want to ask themselves if they or anyone they know has ever seen a cat’s skeleton stuck in a tree?

  1. How many cat skeletons have you seen in trees? Zero, that’s how many. Cats do not need to be rescued from trees. Leave the cat alone and it will get hungry and come down. It’s hard to believe Fire Depts still do this foolishness.
