January 6 Committee Issues Subpoena for Prominent Trump Supporter and Affiliates

The House select committee investigating the January 6 protest has subpoenaed a prominent organizer of the rallies leading up to the storming of the Capitol and his affiliates. The subpoena states that it wants to question him about threats of violence, coordination with the Trump White House, and false permit applications.

January 6 committee chairman, Democrat Representative Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, reportedly sent a subpoena to social media activist and organizer Ali Akbar. Akbar is more commonly known as Ali Alexander and formed an LLC called Stop the Steal following the announcement of Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

The subpoena states that “in the weeks before the January 6th attack, Mr. Alexander made repeated reference during Stop-the-Steal-sponsored events to the possible use of violence to achieve the organization’s goals” and that he “claimed to have been in communication with the White House and Members of Congress regarding events planned to coincide with the certification of the 2020 Electoral College results.”

In a statement on Telegram, Alexander responded to the accusations saying, “Last year, I organized 500 peaceful rallies across this nation asking our government to look into election irregularities, including one on January 5 and two on January 6. It wasn’t just my lawful right but also my duty as a concerned citizen. There is no place for vandalism or violence in our Stop the Steal movement. I made that clear in countless speeches. I am being targeted because I am a Black patriotic man peacefully agitating an insecure government.”

Nathan Martin, whose name was on permission applications for a rally on the Capitol grounds on January 6, and George B. Coleman, the LLC’s registered agent, also received subpoenas. The subpoenas offer all three men two weeks to provide pertinent documents and require them to give sworn depositions by the end of October.

The committee wants to know why Alexander and Martin were engaged in permission applications for a January 6 demonstration on Capitol grounds that claimed it would only be attended by about 50 people.

According to a September report from Buzzfeed News, Alexander was linked to several permit applications for rallies around the U.S. Capitol that raised questions about plans to surround the building with thousands of disgruntled protesters who believed the election was fraudulent.

Rep. Thompson issued a statement claiming, “The rally on the Capitol grounds on January 6, like the rally near the White House that day, immediately preceded the violent attack on the seat of our democracy. Over the course of that day, demonstrations escalated to violence, and protestors became rioters. The Select Committee needs to understand all the details about the events that came before the attack, including who was involved in planning and funding them. We expect these witnesses to cooperate fully with our probe.”

Thompson warned, “for those who don’t agree to come in voluntarily, we’ll do criminal referrals and let that process work out.

The Committee also sent subpoenas to 11 people who allegedly helped organize the rally at the Ellipse in front of the White House, where Trump gave a speech and urged his supporters to peacefully and patriotically march towards the Capitol and have their voices heard.

Additionally, the committee sent subpoenas to several top Trump aides including, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former White House adviser Steve Bannon, former deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, and former Pentagon chief of staff Kash Patel. The committee is not only looking for testimony but also documents and electronic records from all four men.

The committee has written to eight separate federal agencies requesting information and documents on the possible activities of Trump administration officials in the January 6 protest. It has also filed subpoenas to private telecom providers to get phone information from anyone who may have been participating in the January 6 uprising, which may include some Republican members of Congress.
