New York welcomed its first female governor as soon as the clock struck midnight at the end of Andrew Cuomo’s last day.
Chief Judge Janet DiFiore swore in Kathy Hochul on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at a private ceremony in the state Capitol building.
“Honored to be officially sworn in as New York’s 57th Governor,” tweeted Hochul. “Looking forward to the full swearing-in ceremony with my family later this morning and addressing the people of New York later today.”

Her ceremonial swearing-in occurred at 10 am Tuesday, after which she gave a short speech that began with, “Brevity is the hallmark of my administration.” Hochul was not voted in but stepped up from her previous position as Lieutenant Governor, a role she’d been in since 2015.
Former governor Andrew Cuomo cleared the way for the historical moment when he resigned his position as governor after allegedly utilizing his status to sexually harass employees and others. The state Attorney General corroborated the sexual harassment and misconduct claims from 11 women.
Cuomo said Hochul is “smart and competent,” adding, “I believe she will step up to the challenge. I wish her every success.”
Hochul will be giving her first address as governor at 3 pm, saying she will update New Yorkers with a list of her priorities. She also addressed the need for change and promised “a fresh collaborative approach. I want people to believe in their governor again.”
