Reuters leaked the contents of a July 23 call between the former President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, and Joe Biden. The two spoke about the ever-advancing Taliban as it made its way to Afghanistan’s capital city, Kabul.
The call showed Biden issuing a command that Ghani pretend that the Afghanistan military would put up a fight against the Taliban’s impending terrorist takeover.
According to the transcript, Biden said: “Hey look, I want to make it clear that I am not a military man any more than you are, but I have been meeting with our Pentagon folks, and our national security people, as you have with ours and yours, and as you know. I need tell you the perception around the world and in parts of Afghanistan, I believe, is that things aren’t going well in terms of the fight against the Taliban.”

The message in the private call comes in stark contrast to Biden’s public statements to the American people and the press. Biden promised that the Afghanistan military would be successful at keeping the Taliban from gaining control. The videos and images of Afghanistan military members laying their weapons at the feet of the Taliban showed Biden to be a liar.
While Biden told us that Afghanistan was safely in the hands of a democratic government, he orders the President of Afghanistan to do the same. “There’s a need, whether it is true or not, there is a need to project a different picture,” Biden said the Ghani.
Before calling President Ghani, who fled like a coward while his country descended into chaos, “a brilliant and honorable man,” Biden promised to “continue to fight hard diplomatically, politically, economically” to make sure Ghani’s presidency was defended.
“I don’t know whether you’re aware, just how much the perception around the world is that this is looking like a losing proposition,” said Biden. He quickly assured Ghani that it was not a losing battle, but Ghani needed to change the narrative.
Ghani attempts to explain to Biden the Afghanistan military wasn’t capable of fighting back. “Mr. President, we are facing a full-scale invasion, composed of Taliban, full Pakistani planning and logistical supports and at least 10-15,000 international terrorists, predominately Pakistanis thrown into this, so that dimension needs to be taken account of,” said Ghani.
As Ghani continued to explain multiple reasons why they are losing, including the troops’ morale, Biden responded, “Look, close air support works only if there is a military strategy on the ground to support.”
