Los Angeles Teenager Killed in Police-Involved Shooting During Chaotic Attack in Retail Store

According to a Los Angeles Police Department report, a teenager was struck and killed by police gunfire during a chaotic scene at a retail shop. Shortly before noon on December 23, North Hollywood police responded to a radio call for an assault with a deadly weapon in progress. While on their way to the scene, they received several other calls from the same location claiming there were possible gunshots and that people were sheltering in place.

When the officers arrived, they discovered a woman bloody, suffering from several injuries. They also found the suspect near the fitting room section of the store.

The suspect was hit by police gunfire and was taken into custody but was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. One victim was taken to the hospital with injuries suffered from the attack, but their condition is currently unknown.

Unknown to the police at the time, there was a 14-year-old behind a wall in a changing room, just behind the suspect and out of sight.

The girl and her mother were reportedly in the changing room when officers confronted the suspect, and the shooting took place. Officers found the girl as they were searching for other suspects and victims. She had been struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe she was hit by one of the rounds fired at the suspect by an officer.

Police Chief Michel R. Moore stated:

“I am profoundly sorry for the loss of this young girl’s life and I know there are no words that can relieve the unimaginable pain for the family. My commitment is to conduct a thorough, complete and transparent investigation into the circumstances that led up to this tragedy and provide the family and public with as much information as possible.”

Per Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), the California Attorney General’s Office will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting. The California Department of Justice, in cooperation with other law enforcement partners, is also investigating the incident.

The Los Angeles Police Department Family Liaison is working with the city’s Crisis Response Team and city council members to assist the girl’s family.
