Lt. Col. Scheller in the Brig After Asking for Accountability from Military Leaders

Last month United States Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller made a viral video demanding answers from top military brass for the deaths of the 13 US service members killed in the bombing at the airport in Kabul. His family announced that their son had been arrested and put in the brig.

The video was captioned: “To the American leadership. Very Respectfully, US.” In the video, Lt. Col. Scheller shared a powerful message about what happened in Afghanistan and pleaded for accountability from leadership for decisions that led to the death of American soldiers.

Lt. Col. Scheller said that people are not upset at the “Marine on the battlefield.” He said, “People are upset because their senior leaders let them down. And none of them are raising their hands and accepting accountability or saying, ‘We messed this up.’ ”

Scheller said that “behind-the-scenes” commanders get fired over a simple complaint while the brass consistently shows their fatal incompetence and gets promoted.

Lt. Col. Scheller called out military leaders and their neglect directly. “We have a Secretary of Defense that testified to Congress in May that the Afghan National Security Force could withstand the Taliban advance. We have Chairmans of Joint Chief, who the [Marine Corps] Commandant is a member of that, who is supposed to advise on military policy. We have a Marine Combatant Commander — all of these people are supposed to advise.”

Today, Congress grilled those military leaders over the entirety of the Afghanistan War failure and asked similar questions of accountability and incompetence as Lt. Col. Scheller. Unlike Congress, Scheller is being attacked for those questions and was arrested by military police.

Stu Scheller Sr. told Task&Purpose that his son’s only crime was saying what everyone else was thinking. “All our son did [was] ask the questions that everybody was asking themselves, but they were too scared to speak out loud,” he said.

“He was asking for accountability. In fact, I think he even asked for an apology that we made mistakes, but they couldn’t do that, which is mind-blowing,” said Scheller Sr.

The Task&Purpose reporting shared a statement by the Marine Corps confirming that “Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller Jr. is currently in pretrial confinement in the Regional Brig for Marine Corps Installations East aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune pending an Article 32 preliminary hearing.”

The Marine Corps said that Lt. Col. Scheller is accused of the following offenses under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ):

Scheller’s father said the military had a “gag order” on his son, and he spoke anyway. “He did, and they incarcerated him. They don’t know what to do with him,” Scheller Sr. said.
