The Daytona Beach Police Department announced that Officer Jason Raynor was shot in the head around 9:00 p.m. on June 23, 2021. They identified the suspect as 29-year-old Othal Wallace. Officer Raynor did make it out of surgery but is still in critical condition.

A statement released by the Daytona Police Department said, “Other officers arrived shortly afterward to the scene, finding the officer who was shot lying on the ground. Paramedics took the officer to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment. He is now out of surgery and remains in critical condition.”

It also stated that “a multi-agency manhunt for Wallace is now underway.” Othal Wallace did escape before other officers arrived on the scene. The Daytona Police Department said that Wallace “may be in a gray 2016 Honda HRV with a California tag of 7TNX532.” Daytona PD said they are offering a $100,000 reward “for anyone who can help authorities locate the man who shot one of our officers in the head earlier this evening.”

Local reports say that this isn’t Othal Wallace’s first run-in with police. He reportedly has 19 criminal cases in Volusia County, 2 in Broward County, and 1 in Seminole County. He has possibly been spotted in or around the Atlanta area.

The DPD tweeted out the link to a GoFundMe page to support the Raynor Family saying, “Many of you have reached out to us about providing some form of assistance to Officer Jason Raynor and his family during this difficult time.” The fundraiser’s statement says, “This incident is not only physically traumatizing but emotional. This HERO has a long road ahead of him. DBPD is asking for your assistance in supporting his family during this difficult time. The set up of this GoFundMe page is for the sole purpose of providing assistance for the Raynor Family for his swift recovery.”

Speaking to reporters, Daytona Police Chief Jakari Young called Officer Raynor a “hero.” He said, “The surgery was fairly successful. He still has a long way to go. I am extremely heartbroken, especially because this particular cop, knowing him if he pulls through, he will do everything in his power to get back on the job and continue serving the citizens of this community.”

He told reporters that the “manhunt continues for the coward responsible for this” and that “this entire county is on lockdown until we track this coward down.”

“I’m grateful for every agency that’s responded over here tonight to help us as they’re committed to staying out here until we get this coward in custody,” said Chief Young.
