Minneapolis Rioters Strike Again After Man Is Killed By A U.S. Marshal

The city of Minneapolis is in turmoil again after rioters lit a dumpster on fire and looted the streets Thursday night. The chaos occurred near a parking garage where a man died Thursday when authorities who were part of a task force that included U.S. Marshals shot a suspect who was wanted for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

The shooting took place shortly after 2 pm on Thursday.

“During the incident, the subject, who was in a parked car, failed to comply with officers’ commands and produced a handgun resulting in task force members firing upon the subject,” the U.S. Marshals said in a statement. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The U.S. Marshals reported only one Marshal sustained a minor injury and was treated for glass debris. The number of shots or law enforcement officials involved in the shooting has not been confirmed.

Shortly after the shooting, a crowd of protesters began to form surrounding the crime scene. Although media outlets reported “peace activist groups” were on the scene, it’s evident that they made no real impact as the small protest grew into a full-blown riot.

After authorities cleared the crime scene, rioters took to the street in anger. They managed to drag a dumpster near the location and began to burn the dumpster into a “puddle of fire,” according to KSTP-TV, tossing items into the dumpster to keep it burning while chanting anti-police slogans.

Due to the drastic defunding of the first responders in the city, it reportedly took the Minneapolis Police Department around 40 minutes to respond after it was lit and extinguished the fire.

The incident rekindled anti-police sentiment in the city, as protesters continued to shout expletives at the police and to cause as much chaos as possible. It became evident early Thursday night that most protesters had no clue why or even who they were protesting for.

The chaos continued throughout the night as protesters terrorized the street past 2 am CST. The already crippled Minneapolis Police Department struggled to maintain order as looters smashed windows of cars in businesses throughout the night.

The shooting occurred a few blocks away from the street corner where George Floyd died while in the custody of Minneapolis police. His death sparked local riots that quickly spread across the United States and has led to nationwide efforts to “defund” police departments. Unlike the historic non-violent civil rights protest in the ’60s, the only possible outcome from these protests is a negative and violent response.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms announced that they were responding to help investigate via Twitter.
