A parent’s worst nightmare took place recently on Interstate-75 in Detroit. As Brian Christian drove along in his car, according to USA Today, “a light-colored four-door car pulled up next to the victim’s vehicle and began firing.” Bullets struck two children sitting in the vehicle, and one of them is dead.
Investigators identified the murdered child as Brison Christian, the nephew of a Detroit police officer assigned to the 6th Precinct.
Michigan State Police (MSP), which is investigating the incident, announced the information in a Tweet. In a short announcement to the press, interim Police Chief James White offered his agency’s support. “The Detroit police’s homicide section would be available to support and assist the Michigan State Police in its investigation to help get this monster off the street.”

After the shooting, Christian pulled over and discovered his two children, Brison, age 2, and Brian Jr., 9, had been shot. Both were transported to Children’s Hospital of Michigan, where Brison was pronounced dead. Brian Jr. was initially listed in serious condition but was treated and released later that evening.
USA Today also reported the motive for the shooting, and another that occurred soon after the children were shot, is unknown. The Detroit News (TDN) said two victims in the later shooting were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital. It is unclear if the two shootings are related.
In another report, TDN said Christian “wonders if the shooting was a ‘targeted hit’ intended for another dark pickup. He may have been alluding to the other shooting referenced above. Christian said,” I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.” A dramatic understatement if there ever was one.
On Saturday, June 19th, the MSP’s Special Investigations Section announced “multiple arrests” in connection with Thursday’s shooting.
Although arrests have been made, anyone with information on this case should contact the MSP at (734) 287-5000 or 855-MICH-TIP.
