Needing a Spectacle as a Distraction, Newsom Challenges DeSantis to Debate—on CNN

Though it would be loads of fun, fans of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are right to have mixed feelings about Business Insider’s report that California Gov. Gavin Newsom has challenged (well, tweeted) DeSantis to a debate.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

Newsom tweeted, “Hey @GovRonDeSantis, clearly you’re struggling, distracted, and busy playing politics with people’s lives. Since you have only one overriding need—attention–let’s take this up & debate. I’ll bring my hair gel. You bring your hairspray. Name the time before Election Day. @CNN”

California Governor Gavin Newsom

Newsom followed the leftist formula nearly flawlessly. Create a spectacle that will distract from his disastrous stint as governor, pretend you’re doing a great job, and don’t forget to accuse your opponent of doing exactly what you’re doing.

His challenge could be viewed as putting the Florida Gov. in a situation where, if he declines, it could look like he’s afraid of debating Newsom.

But clearly, DeSantis isn’t politically afraid of anything or anyone. And there are plenty of legitimate, grown-up reasons not to debate Newsom. Not giving Newsom the spectacle he wants/needs is one. And, if Newsom hadn’t noticed, he’s not running against DeSantis—yet.

However, along with his challenge, Newsom tossed DeSantis an unintended easy-out you may have caught. Newsom’s tweet indicated the debate would be on CNN.

Aside from this challenge serving Newsom as spectacle, distraction, and facetime with a national audience, why would DeSantis agree to debate him on a struggling network that has served for decades as a virtual state news agency for the Democrat Party and has treated Republicans so poorly?
