New Snapchat Feature Revealing Users’ Exact Location Hailed as “Creepy”

The popular social media app, Snapchat, released a new feature this week that many are calling “creepy.”

In the recent update, users are now able to see the exact location of their friends any time they like — including a specific street address and the duration of the journey if they decide to visit.

This update is part of the paid, upgraded version of the service called Snapchat+. Among other features, users can pay a monthly fee of $3.99 and gain access to their friends’ travel and location history over the previous 24 hours. Of course, each user must allow their location to be visible before it is made available to their respective friends.

Snapchat said the feature is initially disabled until a user turns it on; it can be turned off at any time by activating “Ghost Mode.”

A Snapchat spokesperson said

“Location sharing via the Snap Map is off by default, and Snapchatters who do decide to share their location will only be able to see and be seen by mutual friends. We have zero tolerance for any sort of bullying or harassment and ask that Snapchatters report abuse or any other safety concerns in the app.”

Previously, Snapchat told the Daily Mail that depending on the number of images and videos posted in a region, along with the age of the person posting, the accuracy of the sections of the map showing strangers’ stories can be reduced to 4 kilometers, or about 2.5 miles.
