New York City Set to End Vaccine Passports and Mask Mandates in Schools

Beginning March 7, New York City will cancel its citywide vaccine mandate. Mayor Eric Adams also announced his intent to eliminate the mask mandates for school children, pending no “unforeseen spikes” in Covid cases.

Kathy Hochul, the newly elected Governor of New York, announced her intention to lift the state mask mandate for schools. Under this new order, local governments can decide if they want to keep or dissolve their mask mandates. She hoped that Mayor Adams would follow suit in eliminating masks in schools.

Adams stated:

“At the end of this week, we will evaluate the numbers and make a final announcement on Friday. If we see no unforeseen spikes and our numbers continue to show a low level of risk, New York City will remove the indoor mask mandate for public school children.”

The Key2NYC requirements will no longer be in effect after March 7th. The requirements included proof of vaccination to dine in restaurants, use gyms, and frequent indoor entertainment centers.

City employees are still required to be vaccinated, even with the new order. Adams double down, saying, ” All other vaccine mandates in New York City will remain in place at this time as they are, and have been, vital to protecting New Yorkers.”

Many indoor entertainment venues will be relieved to not have to check the vaccination status of their patrons. It should be no surprise though that some businesses will choose to keep the vaccine passport requirement.
