NY Jewish Museum Threatens to Cancel Event if DeSantis is Allowed to Speak

The New York City Museum of Heritage told a group of Jewish leaders that they needed to disinvite Governor DeSantis or hold the event elsewhere. DeSantis has been a fierce defender of Israel and Jewish causes.

Elliott Abrams and Eric Cohen founded the Jewish Leadership Conference, which meets annually to discuss Israel and the Jewish people. They planned to hold the event at the Museum of Jewish Heritage on June 12.

Abrams and Cohen wrote:

“We thought it would be interesting to invite Gov. Ron DeSantis to discuss how the ‘Florida model’ has contributed to the growth and vitality of Jewish life in his state.”

The group was working closely with the museum on the details of the event when they were told, “DeSantis didn’t ‘align with the museum’s values and its message of inclusivity.”

When the gentlemen pressed about why their event was canceled, the museum’s CEO said, “We don’t do politics, whether left or right.”

This turned out not to be true. In 2018, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez was a featured speaker at the museum sponsored by the Immigration Arts Coalition. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio had also spoken at the museum.

Abrams and Cohen announced they will continue their event with DeSantis as speaker. They stated, “The Jewish Leadership Conference won’t be canceled, and the governor of the state with America’s third-largest Jewish population will speak. We will hold our event as planned, at a different, secular venue. But it is sad to see that the misguided leadership of a Jewish museum won’t allow alternative ideas a seat at the Jewish table.”
