In New York City, a teacher’s group protesting forced vaccinations marched over the Brooklyn Bridge, with some protestors screaming against President Joe Biden. In a video uploaded to Twitter on Monday, individuals were heard yelling “f**k Joe Biden” while crossing the Bridge. They also chanted “fire Fauci” and were seen holding signs that read “Last years heroes, This years unemployed,” “My body, my choice,” and “I call the shots.”
The protest was organized by Teachers for Choice and was held in Foley Square on Monday. Hundreds of individuals, including current and former teachers, parents, and other school personnel, gathered to denounce forced vaccines as a condition of employment. Protesters from the “Freedom Rally” in Foley Square then marched across the Brooklyn Bridge.
Amy Carroll, a retired teacher, told PIX 11, “I have lived and worked in this city as a civil servant for 28 years of my life. I should be able to make my own health decisions and make a decision that doesn’t affect my employment that doesn’t affect my right to go to a restaurant, or a Broadway play, a museum.” Amy’s husband Bill stated, “I think what they’re doing in America, they’re taking away our rights about all decisions, medical decisions, we’re standing here we’re letting the government take over everything.” Another retired teacher, Wade Willet, said, “I submitted my retirement on August 8 because of de Blasio. I had COVID in March of 2020, and I recovered from it, so I felt I’m immune, I’m a science teacher, and they said you’re not [immune].”
Alycia Morell of Queens stated, “I came with a bunch of teachers from a school in Whitestone, Queens. We’re here because of the mandates; some of us are even vaccinated, but we’re fighting the mandate, and we don’t want the children to have to be mandated for vaccines — so we’re fighting for everybody, not just ourselves.”
While they are unhappy with Biden, Mayor Bill de Blasio is the primary focus of their rage. He stated last month that by September 27, all Department of Education staff must have had at least one dose of the Covid vaccine. This applies to all 148,000 DOE employees who work in city schools. Teachers also argued that getting vaccinated is a personal decision and should not be pushed upon them or the students.
Teachers for Choice has announced that they will sue the city this week over the vaccination requirement. The protest and impending lawsuit come shortly after small businesses in New York filed suit against Mayor de Blasio for implementing a city-wide “proof of vaccination” requirement for indoor establishments.
