Oakland Police Chief Calls Defunding His Department A Crisis

Many people believe the Democrats are failing our police officers. They used George Floyd’s death to slash police department budgets all over the nation, despite blaming Republicans. It is not surprising that those cities are now seeing a murder wave sweep through. Oakland, California, is hardly known as a safe haven for law-abiding families. However, this past year you know why it consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous places to live in the United States.

Oakland City Council decided to ignore the problematic issues plaguing their city, which could be solved in part by increasing police presence. Instead of facing the issues head-on, Fox reports that “Oakland, California’s, Democratic-majority city council passed a budget last week that slashes the police department’s budget by $17 million.”

The Fox report quoted City councilmember, Carroll Fife, saying, “All the hysteria that’s been going on through the media and through certain other channels is just that its hysteria and propaganda.” She said, “Investing in policing will only continue to lock folks up but not give them the nurturing that they have never had.”

Oakland Police Chief Leronne Armstrong held a press conference shortly after the budget-slashing news. “I’m going to start off today by saying that I am challenged by the decisions that were made on Thursday around the budget for the city of Oakland – particularly for the Oakland police department,” said Chief Armstrong.

“Today, we find ourselves in crisis. We find ourselves reeling from a weekend of violence where we’ve seen four homicides over a three-day period,” Armstrong stated. He said that Oakland had seen 65 homicides this year, a 90% increase since 2020.

He said that Oakland shootings are up over 70% this year. “Our robberies are up 11% this year. There’s been 1,300 robberies in this city already this year. Our carjackings are up nearly 88%. So we see clearly that crime is out of control in the city of Oakland, and our response was for less police resources,” Chief Armstrong said.

He called out the City Council for claiming that the rise in crime was simply a “speed bump.” He looked baffled as to why the city council would attempt to claim that murders are just “challenges.” He said, “Well, for me, those ‘speed bumps’ are 65 lives so far this year- victims who have suffered at the hands of violence. Whether it is shootings, robberies, carjackings, sexual assaults, none of these crimes are speed bumps. These are people.”

When Chief Armstrong made it onto Fox News’ Jesse Watters, he told a story about a television crew that got robbed trying to film in Oakland. He told Watters, “We believe that we need more resources to address the high spike in crime in the city of Oakland, and that’s really what I have been asking for – more support and resources to address the serious issue we are facing here.”

He said that Oakland residents stop him and tell him that these violent criminals need to be arrested. He said, “That’s what we are seeking to do … make the city safer.”
