Oklahoma House Dems File Bill to Allow Schools to Mandate Vaccines and Masks

Oklahoma Democrats are attempting to undo a law signed by Oklahoma Gov. Stitt, which prohibits schools in Oklahoma from issuing mask and vaccine mandates on students and staff.

According to the Oklahoma Democrat press release, the Democrats in the Republican-controlled Oklahoma State House filed House Bill 2967 or the ‘Safe at School Act.’

The Democrats claim that their bill, authored by Tulsa Democrat Representative Melissa Provenzano, would “restore local control for communities across Oklahoma by repealing parts of SB658.”

The release claims the Democrats are doing this to protect local school districts from a rise in Covid cases. Gov. Stitt has long maintained that individual freedom is paramount, and everyone in Oklahoma has the freedom to wear a mask and get vaccinated. However, the Governor was adamant that Oklahoma would not be mandating masks or vaccines for schools.

Gov. Stitt spoke with local reporters in late July to explain exactly where he stands on mask and vaccine mandates, saying, “This is about personal responsibility. This is about freedom. And so, nothing in the legislation last year prevents a parent from sending their child to school with a mask on or prevents anyone from having their child under 12 get vaccinated.”

He said, “We are not going to mandate that somebody else has to send their 4-year-old with a mask or someone else has to get their 4-year-old vaccinated.”

The Democrats claim that their bill is necessary because “schools need to be able to make decisions about safety based on local data rather than waiting for the Governor to declare a state of emergency.”

A pediatrician named Dr. Deane Waldman wrote an article concerning the “medical science” behind the choices these Democrat-controlled local school districts made in 2020 and how harmful those policies were to our children. Dr. Waldman’s bio says she “is a professor emeritus of Pediatrics, Pathology, and Decision Science; former director of the Center for Healthcare Policy at Texas Public Policy Foundation; and author of Curing the Cancer in U.S. Healthcare.”

The highly respected Dr. Waldman writes, “A randomized controlled study of mask protection was performed in Denmark during April-May 2020 and published after critical peer-review in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Researchers concluded that mask-wearing “did not reduce the SARS-CoV-2 infection rate.” No, similarly rigorous study has been reported showing that masks do protect. Nonetheless, the U.S. government has repeatedly mandated mask-wearing, including for children.”

The Democrats claim that “Enough is enough. It is time to protect our children.” To people like Dr. Waldman, the Governor’s decision to sign SB 658 showed he is protecting our children from people that will willingly mask and vaccinate them regardless of the medical science showing they don’t need either.
