Poll Shows Most Americans Believe There Should Be a Maximum Age For Elected Officials

Joe Biden

Most adults in America, from all political parties and across all age groups, concur that there should be age restrictions preventing older individuals from holding public office. According to a recent CBS News/YouGov study of American adults, 73% of respondents said age restrictions should be in place, while 27% disagreed. The poll showed that 71% of Democrats, 75% of Independents, and 75% of Republicans agree with the idea.

Nearly all age groups agree with some form of age limit. 74% of those 65 and older, 75% of those 45 to 64, 75% of those 30 to 44, and 68% of those 18 to 29 favor a maximum age restriction for holding public office. Among those who supported the notion of an upper age restriction, 40% said that 70 should be the upper age limit, 26% believed that 60 should be the upper age limit, and 18% believed that 80 should be the upper age limit.

Joe Biden made history last year when he took the oath of office at the age of 78, becoming the oldest American president. If he were to win re-election in 2024, Biden would be 86 years old at the end of his second term. He has stated that he intends to run for office as long as he is healthy.

Biden will turn 80 in November of this year, and several members of Congress are already well into their eighties. Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa is 88 years old and will turn 89 later this month. He is seeking re-election for another six-year term. Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein of California is 89 and is currently the oldest member of Congress.
