One can only imagine the great things Richard Scott William Hutchinson will do throughout his life.
Richard celebrated his first birthday and marks his second world record: the most premature baby to survive.
You read that right!
Richard has already accumulated two world records just by being alive.
Richard was born at a mere 21 weeks of gestation, half of a normal pregnancy, which is roughly 40 weeks long. His parents, Rick and Beth, welcomed him into this world on June 5, 2020.
He was 131 days early, weighing less than a bottle of water at 11.9 ounces, making him the World’s Most Premature Baby.
The previous record-holder was James Elgin Gill, born in the Canadian capital of Ottawa. He had tied for the record since May 1987, when he was born 128 days early, at 21 weeks and five days.
A German baby born in 2010 tied him for the lead until Richard beat them both by three days.
Baby Hutchinson was so tiny, his parents could hold him in the palm of their hand. Unfortunately, they couldn’t spend a single overnight with their son in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Minnesota hospital due to worldly conditions.
Still, they made the daily trek from St Croix County, Wisconsin, to visit and love on their son.
“When Rick and Beth received prenatal counseling on what to expect with a baby born so early, they were given a 0% chance of survival by our neonatology team,” said Dr. Stacy Kern, a neonatologist at Children’s Minnesota hospital.
She continued, “I knew the first few weeks of Richard’s life would be very difficult, but I felt that if he could make it through that, he would be a survivor.”
Rick believes that it was their constant support that helped their son pull through, “I think that helped him get through this because he knew he could count on us.”
Beth now believes every parent should advocate for their children and said, “Advocate for your child as much as you can. Be nosy because it is your child, and you deserve to know what is going on.”
Professionals gave Richard a zero chance of survival. Not only did he live, but he set world records by defying their expertise.
