Progressive NY Democrat Predicts ‘Civil War’ if GOP Takes Control in Midterms

Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a progressive New York Democrat, warned that if Republicans retake control in November’s midterm elections, it will “embolden” far-right radicals and white supremacists who, he alleges, “have been pushing” for “civil war.” During a recent interview on MSNBC’s “The Cross Connection with Tiffany Cross” Bowman, a member of the congressional “Squad” led by socialist darling Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), claimed that Republicans will quickly take action to halt Democratic progress in the investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, saying the findings of the House select committee would be “completely suppressed.” He also said that Republicans would “impeach President Biden as quickly as possible and they will continue to find ways to impeach him going forward.”

Additionally, Bowman alleged that if Republicans take back control of the House and/or Senate it would “embolden” dangerous and violent extremists to take action. He stated, “It would also embolden Republicans and the far right, and white nationalists across the country to begin to believe that it is their time to not just take power in the House, but the Senate, the White House and statehouses across the country.”

He continued, “We’ve got to understand that this is a group that has been radicalized by the great replacement myth and many other things, and have been pushing for violence and pushing for even civil war, so that is what’s at stake right now in terms of this election.” He also claimed that “Our democracy is hanging by a thread, and black and brown people, our lives are in the balance if these people come back into power.”

According to an April poll, 44% of Americans believe the United States “seems headed toward a civil war in the near future.” Left-wing non-profit organization, the Southern Poverty Law Center, polled 1,500 Americans and found that a majority of Republicans, 53%, believe the United States is on the verge of civil war, compared to only 39% of Democrats. However, fewer people approved of political violence in general. Only 41% of Republicans, compared to 34% of Democrats and 29% of independent voters, agreed that “some violence might be necessary to protect the country from radical extremists.”
