Savage Attack on Mourners Leaves One Dead and 14 Wounded

The viciousness of the violent reactions to previous violence seems to know no bounds. And this cycle of violence continued at a gathering Sunday to commemorate the death of a loved one.

On December 12, family members were conducting a candlelight vigil in Baytown, Texas, about 25 miles from Houston. During the event, an unknown assailant opened fire on the mourners, killing one and wounding 14 others, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The Baytown Sun reported the family of a man killed earlier in the month had organized a block party and memorial balloon release to honor his passing. Jamal Narcisse, 29, was reportedly shot and killed in his home on December 3, during an argument.

According to The Sun, on December 7, Harris County Court records show police arrested and prosecutors charged 21-year-old Daviyeon Cooper, of Baytown, with the murder of Narcisse.

About 50 people had gathered to celebrate the life of Narcisse. The event took place in the 1400 block of N. Market Loop, Bay Town, TX.  Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said, “Right as they were releasing the balloons up into the air was when the vehicle came. Almost at that exact time is when they opened fire into a crowd,” the Sun reported.

Life Flight transported three victims to the hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead. The sheriff said, “One of the injured was believed to be a young child.”

According to Newsweek, an angry crowd later gathered at Houston Methodist Hospital where the wounded had been taken for medical treatment. The crowd was so unruly the Baytown police requested assistance from Harris County deputies and Texas state troopers to quell the disturbance.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has released no information about a suspect description or making any arrests.

  1. Please do not release balloons. I’m in no way a tree hugger but balloons are very dangerous to the environment and to power lines. Please do your research and find a better way to memorialize someone.

  2. They are also harmful to the animals. What goes up must come down. Ocean mammals get caught up in them. Birds swallow them and die. Just think before you release them .
