School in Texas has Masks as Part of its Dress Code to Skirt Mandates

Paris ISD, located in Paris, Texas, found a clever way to mandate masks in schools this year.

After Governor Abbot signed legislation banning schools from imposing mask mandates, Paris ISD made masks part of the dress code. According to KXAN, “ The district says the change was made to “protect students and employees” as the new school year begins with in-person learning.”

Paris ISD argues that they have not violated the Governor’s orders citing, “Nothing in the Governor’s Executive Order 38 states he has suspended Chapter 11 of the Texas Education Code. The Board of Trustees can amend their dress code as they see fit.

One of the trustees, Dr. Bert Strom, said the change was not permanent and that the board would review the guidelines each month. The board approved the measure with a vote of 5-1, with the board president absent and Clifton Fendley dissenting.

The school board met with the District attorney to help with drafting the new wording. Parents, teachers, and community members sat through the hour-long meeting and offered comments both for and against the masking mandate. Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, is reportedly sending the district a cease and desist letter.
