Selma Alabama Police Officer Ambushed and Killed at His Own Home

On July 27th at 4 a.m., a police officer’s meal break turned to tragedy when an unknown gunman shot him and his companion in an ambush at his home.

The New York Post reported Officer Marquis Moorer of the Selma (AL) Police Department had stopped at his apartment to eat when someone outside fired into his apartment, killing him and wounding his companion. Medics declared Officer Moorer deceased at the scene, and his unidentified companion, reportedly a wife or girlfriend, was transported to the hospital.

Dallas County DA Michael Jackson said, “this was an ambush. He came home to eat and he was there with his wife or girlfriend and somebody on the outside came up and shot him and shot her.”

DA Jackson believed the suspect(s) would be caught quickly but did not elaborate. Jackson said, “These kinds of killings help destroy the community. The gunslingers need to understand that their mothers, sisters and brothers live here. This kind of violence needs to stop.”

Reportedly, his department viewed Officer Moorer as a serious professional whom his peers considered to be a good cop.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall mourned the officer’s violent death. “Once again, one of Alabama’s law enforcement heroes has been tragically struck down.” He added, “Every day, officers routinely risk their lives simply by putting on their uniforms and performing their duties to protect fellow citizens. We must honor them and never take for granted the sacrifices they make on our behalf.”

Marshall told WSFA 12 News, “whoever is responsible will face capital murder and attempted murder charges….” Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. said, “The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s [ALEA] State Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead on the case.”

DA Jackson was right in his belief police would quickly arrest a suspect. WBRC is now reporting the U.S. Marshals from the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, and agents from the State Bureau of Investigation have made an arrest in the case. The marshals and agents took 18-year-old Javonte Cornius Stubbs into custody near Tuscaloosa, AL.

Investigators still don’t know the motive for the shootings. Stubbs is incarcerated at the Chilton County Jail and will be arraigned Friday in Dallas County. Officials say Stubbs has been “charged with murder of a police officer, attempted murder, and shooting into an occupied dwelling.” He is being held without bond.

Selma Mayor Perkins thanked the community for stepping forward to share information that led to Stubbs’ capture.  He also encouraged people to continue to speak up for the victims in their community saying, “If you see it, say it.”

Mayor Perkins said the community will now focus on “preparing a memorial service for Moorer.”

Governor Kay Ivey has ordered the state’s flags lowered to half-staff “to honor this hero….”
