Senator Joe Manchin Dismisses Reports that He Was Considering Leaving the Democratic Party

Democrat Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia has dismissed reports that he was considering leaving the Democratic Party and becoming an Independent if President Biden and his Democratic colleagues do not agree to lower the enormous social spending package to $1.75 trillion.

Mother Jones reported that Manchin has stated that he will call himself an “American Independent” and prepared a comprehensive exit strategy for his departure.

On Wednesday, Mother Jones published a report claiming that Manchin told his associates that he had a two-step departure strategy for the party.

First, he would send a letter to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, resigning from the Democratic Party’s leadership. He is currently the Senate Democrats’ policy and communications committee’s vice-chair. He would wait to see if his action had any effect on the talks. Then he would supposedly change his voter registration from Democrat to Independent after about a week.

The publication claimed that Manchin’s condition for remaining in the party is that Democrats reduce the size of the contentious budget reconciliation bill from $3.5 trillion to half that amount. They said that Manchin had recently met with President Biden, the chair of the Senate Budget Committee, Sen. Bernie Sanders, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and a number of his fellow Senate Democrats in an attempt to reach an agreement. Additionally, they stated that Manchin “is so out of sync with the Democratic Party, he believes it is likely he will leave the party by November 2022.”

Manchin slammed the false Mother Jones reporting but has previously stated that he would not support a package with more than $1.5 trillion in funding.

Before the vote on President Biden’s contentious Education Department nominee Catherine Lhamon, Manchin was surrounded by reporters who questioned him about the story. He replied, he has “no control over the rumors” before dismissing the Wednesday story as “bulls***.”

Manchin, who has been a Democrat since he first ran for office in 1982, is now largely regarded as the Senate’s most conservative Democrat. He and fellow moderate Democrat Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona have continued to be roadblocks in the far-left agenda of President Biden and the great majority of the Democratic Party.

Mother Jones issued an update to their story, saying, “After this article was published, reporters questioned Manchin about it. He replied, ‘I can’t control rumors, and it’s bulls***, bulls*** spelled with a B, U, L, L, capital B.’ ” They also state that “Mother Jones stands by the story.”
