Sex-Ed Curriculum in Florida Does Not Use terms “Boy” or “Girl”

A sex-ed curriculum for 6th graders at P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School in Florida used gender-neutral terms when talking about boys and girls. Instead of using the term boy or girl, the guide referred to boys as “people with penises” and girls as “people with vulvas.”

One of the slideshow slides for the anatomy lesson stated:

“Most people who have biological male reproductive parts are boys and most people who have biological female reproductive parts are girls, but sometimes people can have reproductive parts that don’t match who they are. The lesson then provided drawings of anatomy of people with a penis, and anatomy of people with a vulva.”

A letter sent to the 6th-grade families allowed their kids to opt-out of the lesson for “Conflict with their conscience, moral, or religious beliefs.”

Another lesson included in the sex-ed curriculum focused on LGBTQ topics like sexual orientation and gender identity. Terms such as “aromantic, pansexual, genderqueer, and non-binary” were also defined. One of the slides also told students that puberty may make them want to try “different, sometimes risky things.”
