Starbucks Shuts Downs More Stores Located in Blue Cities

After increased reports of dangerous incidents including drug use, Starbucks has decided to close 16 of their stores in the U.S. In both Los Angeles, California and Seattle, Washington, Starbucks will close 6 locations. Two will close in Portland, Oregon, and single locations in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. will also close.

The company said it had disturbing reports from employees that some customers and members of the public were doing drugs in certain stores. Starbucks has promised to transfer employees to other locations once these are permanently closed.

According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. operations leads Debbie Stroud and Denise Nelson wrote a message to US employees stating, “We read every incident report you file—it’s a lot. We cannot serve as partners if we don’t first feel safe at work, they said, referring to the company’s term for employees.”

Starbucks has also given new guidance to managers to mitigate safety issues. The company will now allow managers to change layouts or limit seating in the stores if needed. Employees can also close the restrooms to the public.
